THE FEAR OF PUBLIC SPEAKING IS VERY COMMON

Most people have a fear of public speaking, which typically consists of the fear of:

  • Forgetting your words.
  • Being asked a question that you cannot answer.
  • Having to deal with a bored or challenging audience.
  • Blushing, sweating, or stuttering.
  • Looking stupid or incompetent.

WHAT THESE FEARS OF PUBLIC SPEAKING HAVE IN COMMON

All these different flavours of the fear of public speaking are really about us being afraid of being humiliated.

Since we have all been humiliated, embarrassed or belittled and therefore know how excruciatingly painful that is, of course we want to avoid at all costs feeling like that ever again.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF PEOPLE

People who want to overcome their fear of speaking in front of people usually fall into one of these two categories:

  • They have to do presentations, e.g. at work or committees
  • They have a message or a business or a dream that they’d love to share with people but am too scared to do it.

The impact of (and problem with) not overcoming your fear of public speaking is significant.

If you fall in the first category where you have to present, you probably just white-knuckle your way through it as best you can, hating every moment of it and afterwards feeling humiliated or ashamed.

If you’re of the second category then you probably avoid speaking in front of people at all costs and you, your dreams and/or your business suffer for it.

THE SOLUTION

Overcoming your fear of public speaking is easier than you think and it does not have to involve medication like beta-blockers, imagining the audience naked or any of the myriad of ‘tips’ that are so glibly offered by those who have no idea how petrified you are.  All of these are at best coping mechanisms, and sometimes not even very good ones at that.

Truly overcoming your fear of public speaking involves releasing the phobia from the limbic brain (also called your emotional brain and like a lot of things in life it’s easy if you know how.
